Is there any way i can stop cold callers calling my land line any time of the day or night please help?

Sign up on your computer at the National do not call list.....takes about a month........the phone goes silent.........relief.........then the few stragglers.........I dont pick up for unknown or toll free numbers after a couple of weeks which is rare...........they stop calling.
